Black wattle - Acacia Meansii. Common in eastern states, difficult to find trees of any significant size due to the acacia spp. short life span. |
Bluegum - Eucalyptus Saligna.A large common hardwood or the east coast of NSW and QLD. Durability 2. Colour varies from dark pink to red-brown, a beautiful looking timber and its potential as a heavy furniture timber is yet to be realised. |
Cedar - Toona Australis. Large hardwood of occasional occurrence in coastal rainforests of eastern Australia, now scarce in Australian forests, one of the few deciduous natives, it is light, durable and beautiful. Indoor use only. |
Ironbark - Eucalyptus Paniculata A medium to large mainly coastal hardwood of NSW, QLD. Durability AG1. Colour varies from pale brown to dark red. A beautiful looking timber not widely used for furniture because it is very heavy and hard to work. |
Jarrah - Eucalyptus Marginata. Large hardwood of the south-west corner of WA , in the 650-1250mm rainfall area and on lateritic soils. Durability AG2. A well marketed dark red timber becoming harder to find. |
Red Mahogany - Eucalyptus Resinifera. Large hardwood of the east coast from Sydney to Nth. Queensland. Durability AG1. Pin holes made by ambrosia borer in the green timber are a common feature. |
Rosewood - Dysoxylum Fraseranum. A large hardwood of the east coast rainforests of NSW and Qld. Durability AG1. A fine and uniform grain with a beautiful distinctive scent. |
Silky Oak - Grevillea Robusta. A medium sized hardwood of coastal rainforests in N.S.W and QLD. Durability AG3. Has been planted extensively as a garden and street plant. |
Silver Ash - Flinderasia Bourjotiana (bumpy ash, cudgerie). A hardwood of coastal rainforests in NSW and QLD. Durability AG2. |
Spotted gum - Corymbia Maculate, Eucalyptus Henryi (lemmon-scented gum). Large common hardwood found on poorer clay subsoils from Vic/NSW border through to Qld. Durability AG1. Gum veins are a common feature with colour varying from honey to chocolate brown. |
Tallowood - Eucalyptus Microcorys. Large hardwood of the east coast and ranges from NSW to Qld. Durability 1. Colour yellowish brown or caramel, sometimes with a tinge of olive green. No gum viens but pin-hole borer marks are often present. |
Palmwood - Cocos Nucifera. An imported timber. Palmwood is harvested from the trunk of coconut palms that have reached the end of their fruit-producing life. Colour dark brown/red with small fleck throughout. Janka <10. Low fire risk rating. Durability AG1. |
